How to Start Your Freelance Art Business?

Overview

In this month DOOMWOOD DO, we are going to cover the following topics:

  • Why should I consider freelancing as an artist?
  • I have zero experience, where should I start?
  • Why there’s no clients contacting me, what can I do about it?
  • Now I got my first client project, how much should I charge?
  • The client is very happy with my work, what’s next?

Why should I consider freelancing as an artist?

Let’s assume you are the most talented artist amount your peers. With your potential shown in the portfolio, I’m sure you will have a very good chance to land a full-time job whichever studio you decide to work for. However, real-life is not like every fairytale – the hero gets the girl, happily ever after. The nature of artist’s role in a company is usually hired as a contractor. It works well with our nature since an ambitious artist always wants to do everything. The downside is: Most of the time, projects don’t lineup perfectly. In that case, taking freelance work will help put food on the table between contracts.

Do you hate people make you wait to hear a simple respounce? If so, you should never make the client wait for your reply, no matter where you are and if you are on vacation. The reply can be as simple as few words like “Got it! Will do ASAP.” or “I’m outside at the moment, will start working on it as soon as getting home.” Reply within a hour gives your client a peaceful in mind.

The client is very happy with my work, what’s next?

If the project you worked on is a good match with your carreer direction, don’t feel afraid asking for recommendations through LinkedIn and later adding onto your website. It makes the client feels good too to help you success.
